Back in the early 1980′s, the Recreation Department of The City of Morganton decided to have a fireworks display on the 4th of July. A small amount of money was set aside and a few fireworks were obtained from the neighboring state of South Carolina. That evening, about dark, there was about 10-15 minutes of fireworks on the campus of Western Piedmont Community College. Such was the beginning… Within a few years this event (with professional fireworks) began gathering crowds which eventually outgrew the facilities of the campus of WPCC. Traffic problems which sprang from the site being located very close to Interstate 40, forced the fireworks to move to the Burke County Fairgrounds. Now, nearly 30 years later, what had become an annual event (which DID include music of all varieties) is quickly becoming one of the premier bluegrass festivals in the southeastern United States. In 2004, the annual 4th of July celebration became the first annual Red White and Bluegrass Festival. That first year was a 2 day event. Eventually it became a 3 day event, then a 4 day event in 2006. In 2010 it became a 5 day festival, beginning June 30th through the 4th of July. So far, we have had visitors from all states in the continental United States and many foreign countries as well. Visitors from Canada, England, Switzerland, Germany, France and Japan have all come to enjoy bluegrass in our North Carolina town.

Notes: The 2013 edition of The Red White and Bluegrass Festival will again host a Bluegrass Camp for Kids. This will be the 8th year of the kids camp and it grows in number each year. The camp will be held at the Collette Street Recreation Center in downtown Morganton on the first 3 days of the festival (July1st thru 3rd). Fees for attending the Bluegrass Camp for Kids can be viewed HERE. Sessions begin about 9 each morning, then a break for lunch (included for participants) and then another 3 hours ending around 4 PM. There will be sessions covering fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass, along with singing, playing together as a band, stage presence, etc. On the final day of the camp, the kids involved will play a short set on stage at the festival, demonstrating what they have accomplished during the week. Ryman Auditorium, the Mother Church Of Country Music and the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974, is sacred to the history of country music. Especially important to the history of the Ryman is its significant role in the history of bluegrass music. Although Bill Monroe had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1939, it wasn’t until a Saturday night in December of 1945 when bluegrass music as we know it today was born when a twenty-one year old young man by the name of Earl Scruggs stepped up to the WSM microphone on the Ryman stage playing the five-string banjo with a three-finger roll. This was the final ingredient in what we now know as bluegrass music. Although it wasn’t known as bluegrass at the time, there was something very unique and special about this edition of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys with Earl Scruggs which also included guitarist/lead singer Lester Flatt, fiddler Chubby Wise, and bass player Cedric Rainwater. Their weekly broadcasts on the Opry at the Ryman Auditorium over WSM, their Columbia recordings, and personal appearances through early 1948 provided the architectural ground work for all of bluegrass music. Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs, Jim & Jesse, and the Osborne Brothers, all legendary bluegrass acts, became Grand Ole Opry members in their own right on the Ryman stage. Also important are the virtually dozens of well known bluegrass musicians who played on this stage while working through the ranks of the aforementioned bands. Notes: Glad to be a part of one of the best festivals in the nation, Thomas Point Beach. Here’s the TPB Fest history: Our Bluegrass History Our annual festival began in 1979 and made a profit of $3.16. Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music played this Festival in 1982, 1983, 1988, 1989 and was scheduled to play in 1995, but was unable to travel. Two June “Showcases” were held in 1986 and 1987. There was no 13th Festival. Pati went straight from the 12th festival to the 14th in order to avoid “unlucky 13”. Pati took a year off after the 25th Anniversary. It didn’t matter… the fans came anyway… they held a “non- festival” and we even had t-shirts made to commemorate it. Over 200 bands had played this festival throughout the years. The First “Showcase Competition” was held in 1992 making this a four day event. Many of the winning bands went on to have very successful music careers. People came to this event from all over the US, Canada and the world. We have had guests from all over; including Japan, England, Sweden, Alaska, Denmark, South America and even a band from the Czech Republic. The Festival was the Featured Cover Story for Bluegrass Unlimited in 1996. The Festival has been recognized on The Today Show, the New York Times, and on countless other state and local TV, radio, and newspapers. White Mountain Bluegrass was the only Band to have played EVERY year. Since he was born, Michael has opened all but two festivals with the Pledge of Allegiance. (he was at college those years…) Past festivals included fireworks, a hot air balloon, weddings, special guest appearances from Miss Maine’s, a visit from the Governor, cloggers, anniversaries, pajama parties, High Teas, Halloween Parties and so much more! The famous “Maine Woods Band” was started in 1998 with the creation of “Tommy P. Banjo Bear”. The piece was the creation of Tim Pickett of Elliott Maine. Photographs of the project were featured in the June 1999 Issue of Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine. The band was completed over the next four years with the addition of a new band member each year. Numerous souvenir Martin Guitars and 1 Eastman Mandolin had been given away in raffles through the years. In honor of the 30th anniversary, the week-end was topped off with a spectacular Fireworks display over the bay!
